Thu02Jun201612:45 pmSt Mary's Church, Aylesbury, HP20 4JJ
We'll be returning to St Mary's Aylesbury for this lunchtime concert in June 2016. There's a cafe in the church that does great cakes as well as omelettes, baked potatoes etc, so plan to have lunch there either before or after the concert as well - hopefully in the garden!
Here's the idea for the concert:
The Andrews Massey Duo (Emily Andrews on flute and voice and David Massey on guitar) will perform a programme of works based around the idea of storytelling. Mixing classical and folk genres as is becoming the duo's signature, they will perform their own arrangements of British folk tunes from their first CD '...from the Roots', alongside Emily singing some of Dowland's lute songs (most famously his gorgeous lament 'flow my tears'), and some Schubert song arrangements from Winterreise (performed variously on flute and guitar and on solo guitar). Expect a very contrasting programme (both in instrumentation and styles), full of stories to intrigue and excite the imagination! -

This is the first concert pianist Alice Rosset and I will be doing together in our midi tour this week. Concerts are free but do please bring money for the retiring collection, which the organisers rely on to help pay for the concert series.
The programme is as follows:
Roussel - Joueurs de fluteDébussy - Reflets dans l'eau (from Images)Thomás - Connais tu le pays? (From the opera Mignon)
Débussy - Hommage à Rameau (from Images)Poulenc - Movements PerpétualsCaplet - Reverie and Petit Valse -
Wed13Jul20166.30-7.15pmCraxton Studios, 14 Kidderpore Avenue, London NW3 7SU
Alice Rosset and I have decided that performing this beautiful programme only once is a shame - hence why we're putting on this open dress rehearsal in North London the night before our lunchtime concert in Leatherhead. We hope that our London friends and family can come, and all unknowns are welcome too!
The programme is stunning, if I say so myself: Entirely French music, mostly for flute and piano although there is one song in there too. There is so much beautiful French flute music that it was very hard to narrow it down to a 45 minute selection, but here's what we chose:
Albert Roussel - Joueurs de flute
Andre Caplet - Reverie and Petit Valse
Debussy - Reflets dans l'eau from Images
Ambrose Thomas - Connais Tu? from the opera Mignon
Poulenc - Sonata for flute and pianoPlease turn up anytime from 6pm, and afterwards we will all go to the nearest pub for a drink and a chat (to get out of the studios as soon after the concert as possible). As I had to hire the room I will be asking a voluntary contribution of £5 from audience members, to cover our expenses for the concert - can slip this to me in the pub afterwards!
-

Sat10Feb201810.45-11.30amThe Assembly Rooms, Faversham, Kent
This is our first Carmen Co show! David Massey and I are joined by guitarist Francisco Correa .
Carmen is a charater who is well known, and who fascinates both men and women. She's a selfish, ruthless and gorgeous femme fatale who all the men admire, and who switches lovers frequently, leaving destruction in her wake. So we have taken this character, and are setting our own story, with the hoards of admirers represented by the two guitarists, and also the audience. Our Carmen oscillates between the guitarists for her preference, and they in turn compete for her attentions. All of this is portrayed through Spanish music as there's no script. A duet is a conversation, virtuoso passages are showing off or competing. Who will she choose?
Music performed on two guitars, voice and flute, and includes arias from the opera Carmen, as well as instrumental works by De Falla, Boccherini, Rodrigo and Bizet.

This will be the premiere of our newly rewritten Creating Carmen show, with script by concert playwright and festival director Clare Norburn, directed by Nicholas Renton. The show was created and run a few times by us in 2018 before my maternity leave, and is now being completely revised. Us three musicians (myself Francisco Correa and David Massey) will be joined by two actors tbc, all with lighting and costumes, made possible by the Arts Council England from whom we've received a grant for this project. Do catch us while we're in London. It will be unmissable! Tickets available from the festival website.
Myself, David Massey and Francisco Correa are so excited to be bringing our Creating Carmen show to Stranraer!
Creating Carmen: exciting reading of a brand new “one-man-play meets concert”.
Meet the colourful writer Prosper Mérimée, who created the Carmen novella (the basis for Bizet’s opera). Clare Norburn’s new work in progress concert/play will explore how his myriad love affairs underpinned Carmen's creation. Mérimée’s experiences will be intertwined with music from Bizet’s Carmen and Spanish or Spanish-inspired music by Boccherini, da Falla, Granados, Ravel, Delibes and Albeniz in arrangements by exciting young trio Carmen Co.
"What is most impressive about Norburn’s conception is the way various strata and elements combine and cohere so effortlessly. Past and present, truth and fantasy, real and imagined come together in a tightly knit and intimate drama" - Opera Today.
